DETAILED PROJECT REPORT FOR REJUVENATION OF KRISHNA RIVER
THROUGH FORESTRY INTERVENTION

Krishna River is one of the important east-flowing peninsular rivers. It is the fourth largest river of India after Ganga, Godavari and Brahmaputra. The river originates from the Western Ghats near Jor village of Satara district of Maharashtra at Mahabaleshwar and after traversing a length of 1435 km, empties into the Bay of Bengal at Hamasaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh.

Krishna Basin occupies an area of 2.58 Lakh sq. km which is nearly 8% of the total
geographical area of the country. The largest part of the basin, nearly 44% lies in Karnataka.
26% of the basin falls in Maharashtra, about 15% in Telangana and another 14% in Andhra
Pradesh.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for rejuvenation of Krishna river through forestry
intervention will be a comprehensive document which elucidates upon the past and present status of Krishna River and its environmental peculiarities; its history of management and prescriptions about forestry interventions for increasing vegetation cover and management. It provides a detailed account of the budget outlay with a schedule of prescribed activities in a planned manner.

The DPR proposes forestry interventions to be carried out by four participating states viz., Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh. The DPR preparation exercise envisaged exhaustive stakeholder consultative process besides the multi-pronged approach including spatial analysis and modeling of delineated Krishna riverscape, and identification of prioritized sites for forestry interventions. Planned interventions will
increase green cover, reduce soil erosion and sediment load in the river, biodiversity
and bio-filtration, and also educate masses about the significance of protecting the riparian ecosystem. The Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), Bengaluru has taken up the task of preparation of DPR for rejuvenation of Krishna River through forestry intervention.

As a part of the project, first Stakeholders consultation meeting has been organized by
IWST and Karnataka Forest Department on 5
th Sep 2019. Shri Punati Shridhar, PCCF &
HoFF, Shri Ajay Mishra, PCCF, Shri Ritu Kaddar PCCF, Dr. M.P. Singh, Director IWST,
